PRESIDENT'S REPORT

I hope that this letter finds each of you doing well and enjoying a wonderful February.  Your colleagues within the association have been hard at work and I have many items to share with you for this month.

First, I would like to inform the association that Kevin Koett, Vice President of Constituent Relations resigned as a member of the SACSA Executive Council in December.  On behalf of the Executive Council and the Association, I would like to express my appreciation to Kevin for his dedication and hard-work to the Association.  In response to his resignation and in accordance to the Association By-laws, the SACSA Executive Council nominated and approved Beth Waltrip to complete the vacated term.  I would like to thank Beth for her willingness to step in and display her leadership on behalf of the Association.

Next, the Executive Council had a productive weekend in January during our Mid-Year Meeting.  The Executive Council was very focused on developing sound plans for the association to consider.  A number of strategies have been identified and are being pursued.   But more importantly, the Executive Council has agreed that WE NEED YOUR INPUT.  During the next few months, we will be asking for your feedback about the direction of our association through a variety of ways.  One will be an Association Survey to help direct the Strategic Taskforce, so be on the lookout for the survey in your email in March! 

In addition, we will be conducting a series of Conversations based on our upcoming conference theme, facilitated by our Conference Program Chair, Kevin Bailey.  He has written about this in this SACSA-lert, so I encourage you to participate in these Conversations. 

Great things are on their way for our association.  And, the reason great things are happening is because we have great volunteers who are working hard on our behalf.  I look forward to seeing you at the conference.  Please feel free to contact me anytime with your ideas or thoughts about SACSA and how we can make it better together.  I can be reached at 615-898-5815, or via e-mail at cmtaylor@mtsu.edu .  Have a great Spring Semester!

2008 NEW PROFESSIONALS INSTITUTE

The SACSA/NASPA Region III New Professionals Institute is looking for great new professionals to come to Tulane University in New Orleans June 16-20.  This is an excellent opportunity for staff members new to Student Affairs to learn more about the field and their role in it.  The application web site is open and applications and letters of support from Senior Student Affairs Officers are due April 11, 2008.  Just click on this link and submit the application.  If you have any questions, please contact Gage Paine, NPI Director at gage.paine@utsa.edu.  We look forward to having a great institute this summer, but we need you to be part of it.

SACSA FACULTY CASE STUDY COMPETITION

Hello faculty members!!

Each year at our annual SACSA meeting, students from institutions across the SACSA region compete at our graduate case study competition. This year, we are inviting our SACSA faculty members to participate in the competition by writing and submitting a case. The winning case will be used in the graduate student case study competition at the 2008 SACSA Conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Additionally, the winning case study will be published in the SACSA Journal and posted on the SACSA website.

More details about the case study writing and submission process will be forthcoming in the next SACSA-lert and on the SACSA website. So start brainstorming about a realistic case you could write that would assist our students in using their student affairs skills, provide you with a fun way to get involved in some friendly competition, and help you obtain a publication too!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

The Membership Committee is making some progress on our goals for this year.  The Executive Committee approved our goals and budget at its meeting last month.  Although there were a few changes, we are excited to see everything come to fruition.  We are currently focusing our efforts on updating the brochure and gathering some information we need to provide better communication to new and current members about membership.  Once these are established, the state representatives will be more involved in communicating and promoting SACSA to the professionals in their states. As we make progress, we hope you will notice a positive difference in overall communication regarding membership.  We are excited about the potential for our organization and we hope you will continue to tell your colleagues and new professionals about SACSA.  If you have any ideas or any questions, please contact us (renita.avery@murraystate.edu; desmedle@samford.edu).

COLLEGE STUDENT AFFAIRS JOURNAL UPDATE

Volume 16, Number 2 of the College Student Affairs Journal was published in December.  I have learned that only about 500 were sent out since many member’s memberships had expired.  If you did not get a Journal, please check your membership status on the website.  Once I am informed by Joe that you have paid your membership dues I will gladly mail a journal to you.  In the alternative you may send me a check for $10.00 made out to SACSA, I will also be able to send you a journal.  This is an extraordinary journal called Difficult Dialogues, one of our special issues which deals with race, gender, homophobia, and many other difficult issues with which we have to deal on campus.  It is not to be missed.  I have already gotten a number of requests from students and faculty in graduate programs all over the US.
