SACSA/NASPA Region III Annual Conference

November 1, 2008 through November 4, 2008

Recent events in student affairs have imposed changes on how we do or conceive of our work – Virginia Tech shooting; Rider College death; Spellings Commission Report. Often times meaningful conversation occurs as a reaction to these external factors or when we are challenged to meet the demands of an external entity. Because of the pace of work and demands of our jobs, student affairs professionals don’t always make the time to talk about far-reaching and impactful professional issues in the calm of their day

Founded in 1949, SACSA is a unique organization with a specific niche that has remained virtually unchanged for the last several years. Historically, the purpose of the organization was to ensure the cross-fertilization of programs and ideas regarding student affairs work to bring about an improvement in the field.  The Association, much like our profession is facing imposed changes on how we do or conceive our work.  For example, membership growth has outpaced the organization’s ability to adeptly meet the needs of its constituents. With multiple options for a professional home, SACSA must make bold decisions and strategically plan in order to maintain its values as a regional professional organization of choice for the membership.

The conference in 2008 in Hilton Head will focus on conversations that need to occur within student affairs generally and SACSA specifically. Engaging in deep and thoughtful conversation will help us be better at what we do, whom we serve and understanding the environments in which we work. Examples of such conversational areas may include:

 Student Affairs

  • Threat assessment on college campuses
  • Can we really reduce or eliminate alcohol abuse on campus?
  • Why are so many campuses still not engaged in assessment and learning outcomes?
  • What other disciplines can greatly influence our work?

SACSA

  • What is the future vision of SACSA?
  • Is the Association continuing to be a benefit to its members?
  • How can the Association maintain, evaluate, and develop a high quality organizational structure?

To that end, the Program Committee calls for program proposals that spark conversation and stimulate new ideas and concepts. Special roundtables and forums will be included in the program to enhance the level of our conversations.

The questions are simple. The answers are complex. The time is now.
