Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Student's Story

Aimee Bishop
Academic Success Coach
Florida State College at Jacksonville

Ms. Aimee Bishop has served as an Academic Success Coach at Florida State College at Jacksonville since October 2015. She manages a caseload of students struggling to overcome barriers inside and outside of school. Prior to moving to Jacksonville, Florida, Aimee earned a Masters in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Connecticut and worked in Community Standards. With personal experience as a first generation college student and family on the Autism Spectrum, she works to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students to succeed. Outside of her work, she is a runner, enjoys cooking, and is a big Disney fan. 

Elisabeth Bishop
Current Student
Community College of Rhode Island

Ms. Elisabeth Bishop is a twenty-one-year-old student at the Community College of Rhode Island. She also was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when she was eight years old. Elisabeth attended and graduated from Beacon Charter High School for the Arts in 2014. She went to Rhode Island College for a semester before transferring to CCRI. Elisabeth also enjoys to read and swim. She competes in Special Olympics Rhode Island in swim.

Luke Morrill
Associate Dean of Students
Jacksonville University

Luke Morrill currently serves as the Associate Dean of Students at Jacksonville University. In his role, he works directly with Residential Life, Campus Security, and Dining Services, in addition to supporting capital projects within the Division of Student Affairs. Prior to Jacksonville University, he served as a member of the Residence Life staff at Texas Christian University. Luke is also currently a doctoral student in Higher Education Leadership program at the University of North Florida.

Tara M. Hart
Associate Director of Admissions
Angelo State University

Tara M. Hart serves as the Associate Director of Admissions at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.  She supervises the undergraduate recruitment team and coordinates all university recruitment events. She joined the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management division at Angelo State in January 2011.  Prior to her work at Angelo State, Tara served as the Dean of Students at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska.  She has been supervising aspiring higher education professionals for more than ten years, and is currently a student herself, pursuing a Doctorate in Leadership in Higher Education from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.

Creating and Sustaining Positive Change in Your Team or Organization

Sean Ryan

Associate Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life
Longwood University

Sean Ryan,currently serves as the Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Previously he has served as the Coordinator of Leadership Programming at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While at UAB he taught four leadership classes, started the first UAB Ted Talk, directly advised the leadership programming board, and performed a lot of leadership coaching for other students and offices on campus. Currently, he oversee 23 fraternity and sororities and their everyday operations. Within the community he does a lot leadership initiatives with the different chapters, council leadership and advisors. He has started a program called Greek Emerging Leader Experience, which is a 10-week non-academic program showing what it means to lead by values. Sean has also started his own leadership consulting company called Leading With You Consulting, where he works alongside fraternities and sororities to help them move from average to high performing. Sean also serves as the on NASPA Region III Leadership Team as the Co-Chair of the Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community (SLPKC).  In conjunction with that role he serves on the national SLPKC leadership team as the Pre-Confernce Coordinator.  He holds a B.A in Political Science from the University of Iowa, a M.S. in College Student Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and currently getting his Doctoral degree from Central Michigan University in Educational Leadership.


Mark Deschaine, PhD
Assistant Professor
Central Michigan University

Mark E. Deschaine Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, College of Education and Human Services at Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.  He earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University, has a MA in Education from Grand Valley State University and a M.A.T. from Oakland University.  Mark completed his BS in Education at Central Michigan.  He holds State of Michigan Building Level, and Central Office Administrative Credentials; is approved as a Teacher Consultant for students with autistic, cognitive, and emotional impairments; is approved as a Supervisor for Special Education; and is a certified teacher for grades K-8 all subjects, 9th grade Psychology, and is approved to teach students with autistic, cognitive, and emotional impairments K-12. In 2016, based upon his extensive work in the areas of special education, technology integration, and online learning, Mark was appointed a Fellow at the Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute ( Dr. Deschaine‚Äôs research agenda examines the complexities of the managerial and operational aspects of educational administration, and how these interact with the instructional outcomes of a program. He focuses on the impact of student disabilities on P-20 programming; integrating systems theory, organizational management and knowledge management into educational programs; and effective technology integration to meet educational goals and needs P-20.
