Greetings SACSA Family!
Welcome to the SACSA Foundation webpage where you can learn more about our mission, goals, board members and programmatic priorities! The last two years has been an exciting and busy time for the Foundation. As an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established to serve as a fundraising arm for the Association, we are thrilled to engage you further into our discussions and activities to empower “members to help members”!

During the summer of 2012, the SACSA Foundation board met on the campus of Old Dominion University to begin thinking about a five year strategic plan. We considered strategies to best support the Association as well and identify opportunities for the Foundation to corral resources (e.g. fiscal, human and social capital) to meet our overarching goals. Over two days, the board brainstormed and held discussions with the Executive Council leadership and created the following five, overarching pillars with a set of succinct activities embedded within each. The five pillars were:

  • Social capital: Long-term social and professional relationships are some of the most valuable commodities of the Association and Foundation. The board believed capitalizing upon these assets as critical to determine our membership’s financial capacity and potential participation in giving activities.
  • Access and Accountability: The Foundation sought to solicit ideas and identify ways for ANY SACSA member or student affairs professional to become an active participant in the organization and donate any particular amount desired (.01 and$1,000!).
  • Campaign collateral, communication and coordination: In 2010, the Foundation unveiled its “Cultivating a Life of Stewardship” campaign to the membership via SACSA-lert. The underpinning message of this campaign was to reiterate the importance of philanthropy and the ways participation could accentuate the already-strong programs offered by the Association.
  • Sustainability: A key, ongoing goal and activity determined by the board was to develop activities that would cultivate, nurture and sustain donors and contributors. Essentially, we asked ourselves, “How do we keep SACSA members informed, engaged and eager to help us sustaining this critical student affairs association?”
  • Awareness and Acknowledgement: Unanimously, the Board agreed that there must be mechanisms to acknowledge our members and partners at every point of their contribution and volunteerism. Whether a member volunteers at the Foundation table with their time or contributes $1 to $1000, we believed acknowledgement and increased awareness about the Foundation’s goals were critical.

Since 2010 the Foundation, with the substantial support from the SACSA membership and leadership, has been able to achieve a number of accomplishments aligned with these pillars. Examples of significant activities included:

  • An increased social media presence with the establishment of a SACSA Foundation Facebook and Twitter accounts to highlight accomplishments and contributions of members. Specifically, the Foundation graduate student developed weekly quotes of encouragement entitled “Foundation Fridays” to increase visibility and viability.
  • Unveiled the SACSA “Driveto65K” campaign in honor of the Association’s 65th birthday to increase donor contributions and participation from all membership levels. The campaign, in less than two years, exceeded the $65,000 goal and is in the process of collecting the remaining outstanding contributions.
  • Developed marketing materials and campaign collateral designed to inform the membership about Foundation activities and acknowledge contributions. To this end, the Foundation created a stand-alone newsletter called, “The Foundation” to share information about new trustee appointments, budgets, available grants from SACSA and other higher education associations.
  • Created a “Why I Give to SACSA” testimonial section to share the experiences and thoughts as to the ways and why SACSA members give to the Foundation.

As a volunteer development entity, these accomplishments are significant. All members of the Foundation are all full-time working student affairs professionals in key leadership roles (e.g. Vice President of Student Affairs and even University Presidents). The fact that members of our SACSA family are committed to carving out time to still participate and be engaged is to be applauded.
